Invisalign FAQs
Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions.
-
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign uses a series of clear, custom-fitted aligners to straighten your teeth without metal wires and brackets. During your consultation, we’ll use advanced 3D computer imaging technology to create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique smile. From there, a set of custom aligners will be made to fit your teeth perfectly at each stage of the Invisalign treatment process.
-
How does the Invisalign process work?
Invisalign's clear aligners are designed to gently shift your teeth in small steps throughout your treatment. You’ll wear each aligner for a set number of days before moving on to the next one in the series. This cycle continues until your teeth reach their desired position. Your dentist will determine the length of your Invisalign treatment based on your individual needs.
-
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
Your dentist will decide how long your Invisalign treatment will take based on your unique needs. Factors like the severity of your teeth or jaw misalignment, the shape of your bite, and how much movement is needed to correct the issue all play an important role in determining the treatment length.
-
What are Invisalign aligners made of?
The Invisalign aligners are made with USP Class VI medical-grade, high molecular weight polyurethane resins. They are BPA free.
-
How often do I have to visit the dentist?
Because Invisalign aligners don’t need adjustments or tightening, your dentist will schedule short checkups every four to six weeks or as needed. During these visits, they’ll review your progress, check your overall oral health, answer any questions, and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment.
-
What are the primary features of Invisalign?
The features of Invisalign include:
- A discreet, low profile appearance
- Smooth construction for enhanced comfort
- Do not require adjustment appointments
- Removable for eating, brushing and flossing
-
How much does Invisalign cost?
The cost of Invisalign depends on the complexity of your case and how long your treatment lasts. For example, more severe misalignments usually require more aligners, which can increase the overall cost. In many situations, Invisalign costs are similar to those of traditional braces.
-
How will Invisalign fit my lifestyle?
Invisalign should fit easily into your daily routines. You simply remove your aligners when eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing, so there are no extra diet restrictions, and you can keep up with your oral hygiene effectively.
-
Are there any food or drink restrictions?
Since Invisalign aligners are removable, you can take them out to eat, which means there are no dietary restrictions associated with their use.
However, to prevent staining your clear aligners, it’s best to remove them whenever you drink anything other than plain water.
-
How many sets of aligners will I need?
How many aligners you’ll need depends on the severity of your misalignment. During your initial consultation, your dentist will carefully assess your teeth and provide an accurate estimate based on your specific case.
-
Can adults use Invisalign?
Yes! Anyone who has healthy teeth and gums is a potential candidate for Invisalign.
More and more adults are deciding to undergo orthodontic treatment these days, in large part because options like Invisalign have become available.
-
Can teenagers use Invisalign?
Yes! Teens can certainly be candidates for Invisalign. In fact, Invisalign has created a line of aligners to meet the unique needs of teenagers.
Invisalign Teen aligners have compliance indicators on them (small blue dots that fade away after the aligners have been worn enough) to help teens stay on track with their treatment.
They also come with eruption tabs that provide space for second molars and help prevent them from growing in crooked.
-
How often do I have to change my Invisalign aligners?
Most patients change to their next set of aligners every two weeks or so, but your dentist will tell you exactly how often you should switch out your aligners based on your treatment plan.
-
How do I clean my aligners?
To keep your aligners clean and your mouth healthy, start by rinsing them every time you take them out to wash away dry saliva and plaque that can cause decay and bad breath.
As needed, soak your aligners using denture cleaner, Retainer Brite, or the official Invisalign cleaning crystals to give them a deeper clean.
Before putting your aligners back in, be sure to brush and floss your teeth thoroughly.
Good oral hygiene helps prevent cavities and keeps your breath fresh. Skipping this step can trap food and bacteria between your teeth and aligners, increasing the risk of dental problems.
When cleaning your aligners, use a clear antibacterial soap and brush them gently to avoid scratches, then rinse off the soap. That’s all it takes to keep your aligners clear, fresh, and bacteria-free!
-
Can I play sports with Invisalign?
Invisalign aligners are removable so you can play sports without worrying about causing damage to your aligners.
However, keep in mind that Invisalign aligners must be kept in for a minimum of 22 hours a day, so plan your time carefully.
It is also recommended that you invest in a sports mouth guard to protect your teeth, as orthodontic treatment can cause your teeth to loosen slightly as they shift into their new positions, and this can make them more susceptible to damage.
-
Can I play my instrument with Invisalign?
Yes! Simply remove your aligners if required to practice playing your instrument, and pop them back in when you're done.
-
How do I store my aligners?
The case you received your Invisalign in is the best place to store them when they aren't in your mouth to keep them safe. Since your aligners are made of plastic, avoid leaving them in hot environments where they could warp or melt.
