Not sure if what you're dealing with counts as a dental emergency? Here are some of the most common issues that should be seen by one of our dentists right away. Give us a call, and we’ll book you in as soon as possible.
If you're experiencing severe pain, trouble breathing, major swelling, or heavy bleeding, please head straight to your nearest emergency hospital. Your safety comes first.
-
Infected or Abscessed Teeth
Cavities that are left untreated can lead to infection or abscesses over time. If you're dealing with sharp pain, bad breath, gum swelling, or unusual sensitivity, it's a good idea to see your dentist as soon as possible.
While you wait for your emergency appointment, try rinsing with warm salt water and use over-the-counter pain relievers to help manage discomfort.
-
Severe Toothaches
If a severe toothache is left untreated, it can lead to intense pain, swelling, or even discharge.
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water, and gently floss to remove any food particles that may be causing discomfort. If the pain doesn’t let up or gets worse, it’s time to reach out for emergency dental care.
While you wait for your appointment with Skyline Dental Associates in Ottawa, over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage the pain.
-
Lost Fillings or Crowns
If your dental filling or crown becomes loose or falls out, please call us, and we will do our best to schedule a same-day emergency appointment.
Do your best to bring your crown with you to your appointment. There's a chance our dentists can reattach it.
-
Chipped or Broken Teeth
If you break or chip a tooth, do your best to locate the broken piece and place it in a clean container to bring with you to your appointment. Your dentist may be able to reattach it.
Even if you can’t find the piece, give our office a call right away so we can take care of the repair as soon as possible.
-
Knocked-Out Teeth
If you’ve had a tooth knocked out and can find it, hold it by the crown, never the root, and gently rinse it off. If possible, try placing it back into the socket and bite down gently to keep it in place. If you can’t reinsert it, keep the tooth moist by placing it in a glass of milk or holding it inside your mouth until you get to our office.
To help with pain and swelling, apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek near the injured area.
Call us as quickly as possible. The sooner you’re treated, the better the chances of saving your tooth.
-
Swelling, Pain or Discomfort
If you're experiencing sudden swelling in your face, mouth, or neck, or dealing with severe pain or discomfort in or around your mouth, call us right away.
In the meantime, there are a few things you can do to ease the pain: apply a cold compress to the affected area on your cheek, take an over-the-counter pain reliever, and rinse your mouth with salt water to help flush out any debris that might be contributing to the discomfort.
Once you’re in our office, our dentists will carefully assess your condition, determine the cause, and get started with fast, effective treatment.
